Introducing our newest addition: Solid Body Polish

What are they? Each flower-shaped scrub is sized to be a single-serving scrub. One container contains 10 scrubs and once they're gone, you can buy refills! (This was my awesome husband's idea!!)Save your container and refill it when you start to run out. Our tests have shown that 10 solid sugar scrubs last as long as a 5oz jar of regular sugar scrubs!

-How to use? Simply crush one in your hands with a sprinkle of water and rub up and down your body. One scrub should be enough for most people, but you can use two if preferred.

-What's in them? These little solid sugar scrubs are fun to use and leave your skin smooth and supple! Specially formulated to polish and soften your body, these scrubs are made with glycerin soap, pure sugar to buff away flaky dry skin; hemp seed butter to repair skin’s moisture barrier, and sweet almond oil to soothe and moisturize the skin. Hemp seed butter is rich essential fatty acids and sweet almond oil is an easily absorbed, skin softening emollient oil. Together, they give your skin a healthy glow while rinsing clean and leaving no oily film behind!

Vegan Deodorants Upgrade!

Spa Therapy Works has replaced the old deodorant tubes for recyclable plastic ones! The fact that the previous ones weren't recyclable was bugging me so much that I had to hunt down a new greener packaging option for my precious vegan deodorants. Yes, switching things over is a lot of work (taking new pictures, updating the labels - new tube is bigger...) but I feel like it was the right thing to do. So hang in there while I put them all back in the shop and slowly update the pictures to reflect our change.

With that said, now the new deodorant containers are legible to participate in our “Spa Takes Back” Recycling Program! You’ll get a 50% OFF coupon to use on any single product in the shop when you return (5) containers to us!

Last month, we introduced some of our new labels, have you seen them? They're awfully cute - if I say so myself. All the labels have been revamped, and we're slowly updating the pictures in the shop.
Some products also had their containers updated/upgraded, too! Check out the new BIGGER straight wall jars of our facial scrubs and whipped cream soaps.
They come with ribbed lids so they're easier to grip on it with wet hands. They also have extra ounces, so you don't have to reorder so often, reducing packaging waste.

Quick Update:
Sorry I've been slacking over here. Life just get in the way sometimes and little extra time for fun is left. Now I'm back from vacation with my batteries recharged, I'm ready to implement some changes to my line of skin care that I've been planning for a long time.

First, I'm working on revamping our labels and changing the "feel" of the shop. It's a long process that will require me to retake all my products pictures which is not an easy task, but I know it will be worthy. Even though I know that it will require long hours of work to get this done, I'm excited. So stay tuned!

I have also started working on new fragrances for Spring. We also have been getting requests for more Enchanted Forest and Spoiled Princess soaps so I'll probably bring them back as well. If you have any request for a soap we don't have more in stock, a fragrance for Spring or a custom blend, just contact me through Etsy Convo.

Maryland Food Bank Holiday Donation

With Thanksgiving and the holidays fast approaching, the members of BEST want to take the time to give a little something back to our community. Several members will be donating money from the sale of the their items to the Maryland Food Bank.

The Maryland Food Bank provides nearly 14 million pounds of food annually to 1,000 Network Partners - including food pantries, soup kitchens, emergency shelters, low-income day care centers, after-school programs, senior centers, rehabilitation centers, and other feeding programs. They supply food for over 50,000 Marylanders each week who otherwise would go hungry or not eat enough, including families with children, the elderly, the homeless, the homebound, low-income workers, the recently unemployed, and people with AIDS and other health problems. For every $1 contributed to the Maryland Food Bank, they are able to provide 3 meals to Maryland’s needy families and individuals.

Between having company for 3 weeks, moving to a new house and testing new fragrances, there wasn't much time left for this poor blog. Little Copying Rant

Just wanted to make it public because I know they’re watching – Gees, they even steal the widgets from my blog!

I understand that competition is a real part of any marketplace, and it makes our products to move forward and grow businesses. Competition is a great thing.

But copying is not!

I've been focusing on keeping my products unique, I don’t cut corners on quality, and I’m always trying to update my labels and pictures. I work hard for someone to just come, take a look at my products, see what sells (I hate that about Etsy) undercut all my prices and flat-out copy me!

I can't for the life of me figure out why someone would stoop so low. They must not have much confidence in their own ability of creating or naming products!

We can't control other people if they are working in an unethical way. All I can do is to be ahead of the curve, so the people imitating me will always be steps behind.

So if “you-know-who-you-are” is reading this, be sure that you can have a huge sale every week and out sale me, but that doesn’t make you a winner. You’ll always be a loser.

Read the anti-small and anti-family business draft of the FDA Globalization Act of 2008 and please sign the petition below. If passed, this law would put thousands of Indies out of business by forcing them to pay outrageous registration fees and comply with burdensome paperwork. "The burden this act is trying to impose on small cottage businesses is overwhelming and unfair. I understand that laws must be in place to protect everyone from unsafe products, but I am outraged by the Draft Legislation that would require small cosmetics companies to pay thousands of dollars a year in registration fees and comply with burdensome paperwork that would serve only to put them out of business.

As a small business I and many others are VERY concerned about our environment. Unlike huge corporations that spill super heated water (run off) into our streams and lakes, killing off plant and wild life. We do all we can to make sure we don't put chemicals into our products and we try our best to please and be HONEST with our customers by taking a pledge of honesty in our labeling. Only large businesses would benefit from this act as they would be able to cover the additional fee."

Inspired by the world around her, Jennifer uses her art to search for simplicity and meaning in the beauty of the everyday. Jennifer Squires has been a photographer since 1996 and is currently based out of London, Ontario. Her Etsy Shop: jennifer squires productions.

Tell me a bit about yourself.

My work covers a broad range of categories, from shopping carts to gerbera daisies, but I always find that I focus on the details of life. I am constantly inspired by the world around me and I use photography to search for simplicity and meaning in the beauty of the everyday.

Where do you currently live and work?

I currently live and work from my home in London, Ontario.

How did your interest in photography begin? Do you have any formal training?

I don’t really think there was a moment or an event that made me want to be an artist. I grew up in a very small hamlet so I was always looking for ways to make it more interesting, I guess that’s where my artistic juices began flowing. I’ve always had a camera so I ended up studying photography in high school and college and I’ve been taking pictures ever since!

I hold a Diploma in Photography, and a Diploma in Advanced Photography from Fanshawe College (where I was later asked back to teach in the Advanced Photography Program), here in London, Ontario.

Did your early photographic goals include earning a living from photography, or did it start as a way to express yourself creatively?

In my teen years photography was definitely a way that I expressed myself creatively. Then as my college years rolled around I realized that I could actually earn a living taking pictures! How wonderful!

How do you decide on locations & subjects?

I think that generally my life dictates my locations and subjects. For instance, in the winter when I don't want to brave the weather I explore the beauty in the items around my home (beans, rice etc.), then when winter seems to be dragging on just a bit too long I head for the florist and bring home a bunch of flowers and spend my days recording their grace.

In general, during a session, how many pics would you say you take to find "the right one"?

That's really a tough question and it definitely depends on the subject matter. I am quite picky and I tend to fuss over the details. There are times when an image comes to perfection fairly quickly but I think generally I snap through at least 60 frames before I get what I want.

What makes a good photographer?

An eye for light and beauty. And attention to detail.

What is the ONE lasting impression you want to leave in your photos?

Beauty is all around us.

Facial Skincare Routine

I can’t believe that I forgot to come in here to talk about my new line of facial care! I’ve been receiving great reviews and responses from customers and I’m so excited!! I knew the products were fabulous due to high amount of amazing ingredients and goodness in them but feedbacks from customers are always more exciting than my own and from regular “testers”.

Our full line of facial care includes 1 daily cream, 1 night cream, 2 toners, 1 serum, 2 scrubs, 3 masks and 3 soaps. And to help you assimilate what’s used for what, I created an example of a facial skincare routine for you to follow.

A skincare routine should be followed regularly for the best results. You’ll see the difference when you’re consistent with a daily regimen. And it’s easy to do when you keep it simple.

First thing is to get to know your skin type: normal, oily, dry or combination.

The basics:

Cleanse: A morning and evening routine is essential, and keeping skin clean reduces the incidence of pimples, blemishes, and blackheads that can take a toll on the youthful and even appearance of skin. Use a facial soap or cleanser with warm water.

Tone: Toning is an important step in the daily skincare routine because it removes any lingering impurities or greasy residue and helps balance the pH of the skin. It closes the pores and stimulates circulation, helping to prepare the skin to absorb nutrition from the moisturizer that follows

Moisturize: A moisturizer leaves the skin feeling softer and smoother. It also helps smooth away fine lines and dryness. If you’re using a face serum, you should apply it on toner damp skin. You should wait at least 5 minutes until the serum is fully absorbed by the skin before applying your moisturizer in order to seal and magnify the benefits of the serum. The face serum will actually help your moisturizer to penetrate deeper and provide effective hydration. A sunscreen can be applied on top of the moisturizer and before makeup

For optimum results, exfoliate and use a mask once a week.

Exfoliate: They unveil the new vibrant skin that hides behind a layer of dead cells and impurities, and depending on which one you use, they can help to promote a healthier skin.

Masks: They are good and do a lot of good for your skin. Clay mask are especially beneficial as it draws out toxins and other impurities from the skin and at the same time, the minerals in the clay are absorbed by the skin. The result is that debris is pulled out, pores and hair follicles are cleared, skin is exfoliated and it's left looking truly refreshed and with a younger, healthy glow.

Please keep in mind that the results will not be miracles. :)

Today I bring you some at-home deep hair treatment to bring out the natural beauty of your hair. Your can find all ingredients at a health food market.

Hot Oil Treatment for Dry Hair

Use this intensive treatment twice a month to re-hydrate dry hair and prevent dandruff.

Ingredients

1/2 cup of dried rosemary leaves

1/2 cup olive oil

-Combine oil and rosemary in a small saucepan over low heat, stirring constantly until warm all the way through. Remove from heat and strain, to remove leaves from oil. Coat scalp and ends of hair with hot oil, then wrap in saran wrap and cover with towel to retain heat. Leave on 15 minutes. Wash twice to remove excess oil.

Hair Tonic for Oily Hair

Daily use removes oil buildup, promoting healthy shine, and leaving hair smelling as fresh as it looks!

Ingredients

1 quart distilled water

3 heaping tsp spearmint leaves

-Add spearmint to water over medium heat. Bring to a boil and simmer 5 minutes. Cool and refrigerate in an airtight container. Use daily to rinse hair after shampooing. (You find distilled water in most supermarkets)

Cucumber Hair Drench

If you swim in a chlorinated pool try this treatment to keep chlorine damage to a minimum.

1 egg

1 eggshell's worth of olive oil

1 quarter of a peeled cucumber

-Blend the egg, olive oil and peeled cucumber. Spread evenly through your hair, leave on for 10 minutes, then thoroughly rinse. For the best results year-round, continue this treatment monthly.

Hello everyone! *dusting off the blog* It's been a while! After some much needed vacation I'm back. Spa Therapy Works will remain closed for a couple more days as I'm getting ready to introduce new products to the shop which I'm very excited about. Stay tuned! I'm also going to start sharing great natural skin care recipes for all do-it-yourselfs out there. Simple recipes with ingredients that you probably already have in your kitchen. In this first edition, I'm going to show you how to make facial masks. (It’s best to use a homemade facial mask soon after you make it. However, if you have extra, you can keep most of these facial masks in the refrigerator for up to a week.) Banana Honey Wrinkle Fighter Mask You may not know it, but banana is a wonderful anti-wrinkle product! They are a good source of ascorbic acid (Vit. C), Vitamin B 6 , and potassium.Honey is primarily composed of fructose, glucose and water. It also contains other sugars as well trace enzymes, minerals, vitamins and amino acids

-Mash 1/4 banana until creamy smooth. Add 2 tbsp of honey. Mix well. Spread over face and leave on for fifteen to twenty minutes before rinsing off with warm water.

Yogurt Face Mask for Sensitive or Sunburn Skin This mask is great for soothing chapped, sunburned or otherwise irritated skin. It works well for other skin types as well. For oily skin, add a couple drops of lemon or lime juice. For dry skin, mix in a couple tablespoons of honey.

-Mix 1 cup natural yogurt with ½ cup oatmeal (any type). Apply to the skin for 10-15 minutes and rinse off with warm water.

Grapefruit Facial Mask This is for an oily to normal skin type. For clean feeling skin. Grapefruit contains fructose, acids, minerals and many vitamins as vitamin A, C, D.

-Beat 1 egg white until it is fluffy, add 1 teaspoon of sour cream and 1 teaspoon of grapefruit juice and blend well. Apply to face for 15 minutes. You will feel your skin tighten as the egg white dries. Rinse with warm water.

Pink Cupcake Deodorant! This is so delicious and girly that I just couldn't keep it only available in lotions. It smells like whipped, sugary pink buttercream frosting on top of a fresh-from-the-oven vanilla cupcake, without being overly sweet. It's been a best-seller since its introduction last week. It even got featured on All Things Cupcake! The Black Raspberry Vanilla is another winner fragrance. It's a blend of mouthwatering ripe raspberries and blackberries, warmed with creamy vanilla.
